Srinagar, Nov 3: Residents of main town of Baramulla district have expressed outrage over the Government’s move of setting up a public taxi stand outside the famous Carriapa Park.
The residents alleged that authorities were compromising their security and crippling access to the park by setting up the taxi stand near the entrance. “The taxi operators park their vehicles in front of the entrance and that hinders the movement of the visitor. The women and children also hesitate to visit the part,” said Tariq Ahmad, a local. He said that it is the only park in the main town where people from the surrounding areas come for recreation and amusement.
The residents blamed the local administration for turning the public space into a parking lot. “The officials took a huge amount of money for letting the owners park their vehicles. We have repeatedly raised the issue with the officials but they have paid no heed to our grievances,” alleged Baramulla residents.
They further said that while many public parks in the district have embarked on a turnaround in the past few years, the Carriapa Park has lagged behind. “This park is in bad shape. There are no toilets in the park and rubbish is being dumped here,” said another resident.
Chief Executive Officer of Baramulla Municipal Committee Firdous Ahmad when contacted said that they will look into the matter and will check the status of the allotments.
“I will check who has allotted the land to the taxi drivers and would not let them block the entrance of the park,” he said. The CEO said that during her recent visit, the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has ordered them to renovate the park and that would be done soon.
