The Northern Railways is preparing to commence work on the 50-kilometre Baramulla-Uri stretch in Kashmir, which will bring the train network closer to the Line of Control with Pakistan. This development will not only facilitate local travel but will also greatly aid the transportation of supplies for troops in the forward areas. The Central Government has been undertaking various initiatives to establish railway or road links between border areas, aiming to enhance connectivity for the benefit of residents as well as security personnel deployed in those regions.
Previously, security forces had to rely on trucks for transporting supplies, but with the introduction of trains, large quantities of supplies can be swiftly transported to the border areas. Trains provide a cost-effective and efficient mode of transporting goods and products. The efficient transportation of goods by trains can contribute to the growth of industries, stimulate local production, and generate employment opportunities. The presence of a well-connected railway network enhances accessibility to a region, making it easier for tourists to visit. Improved connectivity through trains can attract more tourists, leading to increased tourism revenue. This, in turn, supports the local economy by creating employment opportunities in the hospitality sector, promoting local businesses, and stimulating the growth of ancillary services such as restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions.
This development is seen as positive news for Kashmir as a whole. Notably, the Government has stated its intention to connect Kashmir with Kanyakumari through a rail link by the end of this year, further improving connectivity in the region. All-weather rail connectivity will be a boon for the entire valley.
