JAMMU, June 25: Bari Brahmna, a small Municipal Committee, has scored first position among all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in J&K in Swachh Sarvekshan Rankings 2018 released by Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) last week.
Bari Brahmna scored 66th place under category of cities with population less than 1 lakh in all ULBs of North Zone in country and scored 1884 marks, which are highest among all small ULBs of entire J&K State. This was followed by Doda, which secured 148th ranking with a total of 1733 marks and Lakhanpur at 245th rank with 1590 marks.
It is also worth mentioning that all these three ULBs had earned a distinction of being declared as Open Defecation Free (ODF) also through a rigorous audit conducted by Quality Council of India very recently.
Sushma Chauhan, Director Department of Urban Local Bodies Jammu informed that this year many towns from Jammu participated in Swachh Sarvekshan-2018 and have improved their rankings. Since about 8 towns of Jammu Province have already been declared as ODF, so in Swachh Sarvekshan 2019, it is expected that the ranking of cities in Jammu Province may get a significant boost due to ODF status, which is a key determination factor.
She expressed her hope that with present efforts being made by Department of Urban Local Bodies for streamlining of Solid Waste management system, including its present door to door service, establishment of treatment and disposal facilities and ODF certification initiatives, next year Swachh Sarvekshan would definitely create a difference for overall sanitation scenario in the State.
