Basohli shawls, paintings can be promoted for exports: Khajuria

KATHUA, Nov 13: Romesh Khajuria, Chairman, Wool & Woolens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India today said that Basohli Pashmina shawls and Basohli paintings have lot of potential and to be promoted for exports.
While addressing the district level export awareness workshop in Kathua, today he said that trade in handicraft and handloom sectors in Jammu province was not given its due share for its development by previous State and Central Governments is the reason that most of the crafts of Jammu region are at languishing stage.
Ambitious one day district level export awareness workshop was organised by JKTPO for the promotion of export of products from Kathua district. Representatives of various departments and organisations presented their presentations and informed about the schemes and guidelines of the Government for promotion of exports of products from J & K.
Sanjay Chawla, Additional Executive Director and Head of Regional Office, Ludhiana Wool & Woolens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC) made a presentation on WWEPC & explained the activities of WWEPC in detail for the promotion of exports.
Romesh Khajuria further said that crafts like Samba Print, Basohli Pashmina Shawls, Basohli paintings, Namdas, blankets, Chickry wood craft, Coochiet, etc. discouraged by the old Governments and failure to provide infrastructure like CFC (Common Facility Centre) or craft development centres created at district levels in Jammu region, weavers/cooperative societies of Kathua district are facings raw material problem of Pashmina.
Khajuria appreciated the vision of Khalid Jahangir, MD JKTPO and efforts of JKTPO team for successfully conducting district level export level workshops in one after the other districts. He also complemented the initiatives taken by the officers of JKTPO by bringing the Centre and UT Government departments and organisations like WWEP, FIEO, APEDA, Invest India, ECGC, Handloom & Handicraft Department J&K, DIC Kathua and Entrepreneurs, artisans, cooperative societies, women entrepreneurs and others on a common platform for the promotion of exports.
Khajuria appealed to the manufacturers, entrepreneurs and artisans to connect themselves with JKTPO to take benefits of their marketing promotion schemes as they are sponsoring various entrepreneurs to national and international events conducted by WWEPC and other departments. With the participation in these events the new business leaders will emerge to boost the economy of J&K, Khajuria added.
