BBIA’s power woes

The recent allegations by the Bari Brahmana Industries Association (BBIA) against Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) for failing to provide uninterrupted power supply underscore a critical issue impacting the industrial sector in the region. Despite generating significant revenue, with annual contributions nearing Rs. 175 crores, the industrial units in Bari Brahmana Industrial Complex face frequent and unscheduled power cuts. This situation is not only alarming but also detrimental to the economic vitality of the area. Running industrial units for long hours on diesel-generating sets is not economically viable. The root causes, as identified, include faults in the 220KV/132KV Hiranagar-Bishnah-Miransahib-Bari Brahmana line and the inadequate handling of these faults by JPDCL. Despite having the provision to shift power supply from the Gladni Grid Station during prolonged outages, the failure to effectively implement this contingency plan has left industries at the mercy of unreliable power infrastructure. There seems to be a lack of coordination and proactive measures by the concerned departments, which has led to an exacerbation of the problem.
This issue is not just about inconvenience; it’s about the broader economic implications. Uninterrupted power supplies are the backbone of industrial productivity and growth. The frequent power cuts not only disrupt manufacturing processes but also erode the confidence of current and potential investors. For a region aiming to bolster its industrial output and attract investment, reliable infrastructure, particularly power, is non-negotiable. The BBIA has been making repeated appeals, urging immediate intervention. Ensuring a 24-hour power supply requires a multifaceted approach, including immediate technical fixes, long-term infrastructure upgrades, and improved coordination among departments. This pressing issue demands urgent and sustained attention. The authorities must prioritise this to safeguard the region’s industrial health and economic future. Reliable power supply is not just a service; it is a critical enabler of industrial success and regional development. Addressing these challenges promptly and effectively will go a long way in restoring confidence among industrialists and ensuring the sustained economic growth of Jammu and Kashmir.
