JAMMU, Mar 3: To acknowledge life long contribution of Shakuntala Seth, the one day seminar organized by Rashtriya Bhasha Prachar Samiti at the K L Saigal Hall, here today, emerged as a befitting tribute to one of the stalwart women Hindi writer, poet, social activist and educationist of Jammu.
Attended by leading writers, poets and litterateurs of Hindi as well as other languages, today’s seminar that brought to focus life long contribution of Shakuntala Seth, a gifted poet and writer, who expired on 12 December, 2012, was presided by Prof Ved Ghai while Savita Bakshi, Additional Secretary, J&K Cultural Academy was the chief guest. Prof Sat Pal Srivatsya, Prof Lalit Magotra, P N Trishal were in the presidium.
The highlight of the seminar was four research papers on life and works of Shakuntala Seth that were presented by Sunita Bahdwal, Kapil Anirudha, Prof Raj Kumar and Prof Ram Pratap.
Shakuntala Seth’s commitment and dedication to social service that varied from providing food and shelter to 1947 refugees, formation of women cell of Seva Dal, rebuilding of national character based on ancient philosophical legacy of Upanishads, penning down quality lyrics for moral education of children and evoking nationalistic sentiments in the citizens, establishment of Jammu Vidya Peeth, school for education of girls in Jammu-all were discussed and acknowledged. Glowing tributes to the social and cultural personality of Jammu were paid by the speakers that included Prof Ved Ghai, Prof Rita Jatinder, Prof Sat Pal Srivatsya, P N Trishal, Prof Lalit Magotra and veteran poetess Krishna Gupta.
Savita Bakshi, in her address said that Academy would take up making of an audio CDs of Shakuntala Seth’s selected poems. She also said that Academy would also try to publish a monograph on her life and works.
Earlier, welcome address was delivered by Neeru Sharma, Chief Editor. Dr Sudhir Mahajan, Senior Instructor Drama, presented vote of thanks while the program was conducted by Yash Pal Nirmal. Prominent among writer, poets and scholars who attended the function included Pritpal Singh Betab, Sanjeev Bhasin, Prof Veena Gupta, Prof B B Sharma, Deedar Singh, Ishupal Singh, Vijya Thakur, and Javed Rahi.
