JAMMU, Dec 6: A three week inter disciplinary refresher course in Human Rights, being organized by the Human Resource Development Centre – HRDC, Jammu University, in collaboration with the Department of Law, commenced at JU today.
The course was formally inaugurated by Dr Ashok Bhan, former Director General of Police and presently the Member of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. The course is being attended by 44 college and university teachers drawn from both within and outside the State.
Dr Ashok Bhan, during the course of his inaugural address, dwelt in detail on various contours of Human Rights, especially in the context of J&K. Calling upon the teachers to be the agents of change, Dr Bhan highlighted the importance of society in creating awareness about human rights.
Defending the Security forces with regard to complaints of Human Rights violation, Dr Bhan said, “There are sometimes genuine complaints and these are also looked into on merit but these may be individual aberrations and the forces by and large are conscious of the Human Rights of the citizens and respect them. It is generally seen that such complaints are filed with ulterior motives by parties with vested interests.”
He also narrated many instances from his distinguished service career in police in order to explain practical on the spot reactions to a given situation.
Earlier, the chief guest was formally welcomed by Prof Naresh Padha, Director HRDC. Prof Arvind Jasrotioa, HOD of Law and Course Coordinator and Prof Sanjay Gupta, co coordinator of the course, also spoke on the occasion.
