JAMMU, July 4: Prominent Supreme Court lawyer and track II diplomat Ashok Bhan has called for urgent measures to restore the historic glory of Downtown Srinagar, a region steeped in centuries-old history.
In a press statement, Ashok Bhan criticized the UT administration for its failure to provide essential amenities to the marginalized public in this area. During his visit to Downtown, Bhan met with traders, artisans and shopkeepers who highlighted the area’s neglect. Bhan assured the residents that he would emphasize their genuine concerns in appropriate forums to seek redressal.
“Places like Habba Kadal, Khanyar, Babadem, Nowhatta, and Rajouri Kadal were particularly noted for their dilapidated roads, frequent traffic jams, and severe shortage of drinking water, which have compelled some families to relocate to other parts of Srinagar,” Bhan added.
In addition, Bhan appealed to the district administration to promptly provide adequate relief to the victims of the recent fire in Bohri Kadal, Srinagar. He also called upon civil society groups to support these fire victims during this challenging time.
Bhan also visited interior areas of Dal Lake where unauthorized structures have been erected with the support of unscrupulous elements. He urged the Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) to protect Dal Lake, emphasizing its importance not only as a prominent tourist destination but also as a livelihood for thousands of locals.
He appealed hoteliers around Dal Lake to collaborate in efforts to preserve this rapidly shrinking water body. Further, Bhan acknowledged the efforts of Environmental Policy Group (EPG) in protecting the natural environment of Kashmir.
