BISHNAH, Mar 11: Senior Congress leader, M K Bhardwaj has demanded immediate relief for the farmers of Bishnah in particular and that of entire Jammu region whose crops have been destroyed during the recent hail-storm and unprecedented heavy rains that have been lashing the region in general.
Chairing a meeting of Congress leaders and workers from Bishnah Constituency, he suggested that the State Government should adopt a two-pronged approach to alleviate the sufferings of the farmers. “An immediate cash relief should be provided to all the farmers without any delay which should be followed by setting up of an expert group to assess the losses suffered by them for providing a proper overall relief package that should cover monetary and agricultural aspects.”, he added.
Bhardwaj also drew the administration’s attention to the poor condition of the irrigation canal network running through Bishnah that caters to farmers all along the belt starting from R S Pura and going up to some areas of Kathua district. He expressed shock that this network has been lying in shambles since long and the farmers were not able to carry out their cropping business even during the seasons last year.
Questioning the newly formed BJP-PDP Government’s claim to immediately undertake development activities, Bhardwaj said that the ruling alliance partners are indulging in worst kind of political fight even before settling down which has caused serious consternation among the people who had voted them to power.
Senior Congress leader, Ashok Kumar Dubey who also attended the meeting said that the irrigation network is the lifeline of the agriculture sector and the Government should take immediate measures to clean and protect the existing irrigation network.
Bhardwaj threatened direct action by the farmers if immediate succor is not provided to them.
