JAMMU:
One killed and six others including two cops and four civilians got injured when protests sparked against removal of posters of Khalistan extremist Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale, took ugly turn in Gadigarh area on city outskirts of this winter capital of the State. A youth was killed while six others were injured when police opened fire to control the angry mob this afternoon in Gadigarh area, an official here said.
He said protestors also pelted stones at the police and para-military troops deployed on the spot. Two policemen also got injured in stone pelting, he said. Police objected the pasting of posters of Bhindrawale in the area as a part to observe his Shahidi Diwas and removed it terming them ‘objectionable.’ However, the protestors were also demanding the release of youth arrested for disturbing law and order problem but police refused to meet their demand and asked the protestors to handover the miscreants who stabbed the sub-inspector.
The scuffle this morning took ugly turn and police resorted to firing with smoke shells and later opened the fire to disperse the out of control mob in which one Jagjit Singh alias Jassi, 24, resident of Singarh, Miran Sahib fell prey to the bullet. Six people including two cops got injured and they were immediately rushed to the hospital.
“The law and order situation has turned violent in Gadigarh area so we have imposed Section 144 as preventive measure,” Pawan Kotwal, Divisional Commissioner Jammu said. He said the situation at the moment is stable and being monitored. (AGENCIES)
