Billy Joel honoured for his impact on American culture

NEW YORK, Dec 9: American music icon Billy Joel has been awarded America’s highest honour for a lifetime of contribution to the arts.

The 64 year-old musician, who has produced huge hits such as ‘Just the Way You Are,’ ‘Uptown Girl’ and ‘Allentown,’ was presented with the Kennedy Center Honour by President Barack Obama, reported Huffington Post.

After receiving the honour, the six time Grammy winner said, “It is a little overwhelming. This is coming more from my country than just people who come to see me.”

Known as the Piano Man after one of his best known songs, Bronx-born Joel became one of the world’s best-selling artists.

Other entertainers who were also honoured at the ceremony were guitar legend Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, opera singer Martina Arroyo and actress Shirley MacLaine. (AGENCIES)
