Birth anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh celebrated

JAMMU, Oct 21: To celebrate the 232nd birth anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh, well known as the founder of J&K State, a function was organized here today by Maharaja Gulab Singh Memorial Trust at Hotel Hari Niwas.

The function was graced by the presence of Dr. Karan Singh, Chairman Trustee of the Trust; Trustees—Vikramaditya Singh, Ajatshatru Singh and Ranvijay Singh accompanied by Jyotsna Singh, Ritu Singh, Chitrangada Raje Singh and Martand Singh.
The event started with welcome address by Vikramaditya Singh.
After welcome address, Ajatshatru Singh spoke about the life of Maharaja Gulab Singh and also read the citation.
On this occasion, Dr. Karan Singh presented Maharaja Gulab Singh Award to Justice Permod Kohli for his contribution in the field of judiciary.
Justice Kohli, son of the soil, in the start of his career remained Advocate General of J&K in 1990 and also President of Bar Association Jammu. He was appointed as Additional Judge of High Court of J&K in 2003 and as a Judge in 2005. Justice Kohli opted for transfer from J&K on ethical grounds on his son starting law practice at Jammu and was transferred to Jharkhand High Court and later to Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh. He was elevated as Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court where from he relinquished the office in 2013. He was conferred with many awards including ‘Vidhi Ratna’ by Baba Sahib Ambedkar, Central University, Lucknow.
Dr. Karan Singh also conferred Maharaja Gulab Singh Award to Dr. Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent of SMGS Hospital Jammu.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Karan Singh said that Maharaja Gulab Singh founded the State of J&K and today much of its part including Gilgit-Baltistan and PoJK is not with us.
“Whatever part of J&K is with us should progress and a peaceful atmosphere should prevail here with employment and education facilities for all,” he said adding: “To remember the Dogra rulers, inspirations should be taken from them for serving the nation with true patriotic spirit.”
He further said that works done by the Dogra rulers should be remembered and special days for these rulers, like their birth and death anniversaries should be celebrated and they should be taught in school education.
In another function, Dr. Karan Singh paid tribute to Maharaja Gulab Singh at a function organised by J&K Dharmarth Trust Council in Shri Raghunath Ji Temple where he was received by Brig R.S Langeh (Retd), president of the Trust and Ashok Kumar Sharma, Trust secretary. On this occasion, Dr. Singh, also Chairman Trustee of J&K Dharmarth Trust, announced 20 per cent Diwali bonus, 5 per cent DA for the employees of Dharmarth Trust and distributed cash assistance to the students of Raghunath Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, Birpur.
Meanwhile, many other organisations also celebrated the birth anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh.
Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS)-J&K organized a function near the statute of Maharaja Gulab Singh at SMGS Hospital Jammu to commemorate his birth anniversary.
On this occasion Ranvijay Singh, great-grandson of Maharaja Hari Singh, Raghubir Singh, Chairman YRS and others paid tribute to Maharaja Gulab Singh and remembered his role in creating J&K State.
Vikram Singh, president YRS, Happy Singh, Mahinder Singh, Rajvir Singh, Ramesh Singh, Pushvinder Singh, Ranjit Singh, Rajesh Singh, Mohan Singh, Rakesh Singh Bablu, Shamsher Singh, Varinder Singh, Mukesh Singh, Mandeep Singh, Avtar Singh, Sanjay Singh, Rajeev Jamwal, Sanjeev Singh and others also spoke on this occasion.
Medical Superintendent of SMGS Hospital, Dr. Dara Singh along with his staff members were also present on the occasion.
