Birth anniversary of Savitri Bai Phule celebrated

Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 3: Birth anniversary of Savitri Bai Phule was celebrated here today by Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha Bahu Fort at Gurudwara Shri Guru Ravi Dass Ji Maharaj. People from different walks of life paid rich tributes to Phule. Students from Savitri Bai Modern School Dolian, Bari Brahmana; Muni Kamal School, Gangyal; Shri Sain Public School, Sheikh Nagar and students from Krishna Nagar under the guidance of Tarsem Lal delivered speeches. Akash Rangeela sang songs in praise of Phule and Baba Sahib Dr. B.R Ambedkar. Volunteers of Bhim Kranti Sena distributed notebooks and pens to students at Krantijyoti Savitri Bai Phule Chowk Bahu Fort through Shaheen Wahid, SP Jammu South. Speaking on the occasion Sham Lal Basson, general secretary Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha Bahu Fort said that Krantijyoti Savitri Bai Phule faced many hardships while imparting education to students during the 19th century when education to girls was a taboo.

"Savitri Bai with the help of her husband Mahatma Jyotirao Phule opened first girls' school in India on January 1, 1848 and faced embarrassment and harassment from the orthodox class which failed to discourage the Phule couple," he maintained. Students who delivered speeches were Mehak Bhagat, Gurdeep, Chahat, Mehak, Karan Didwal, Saniya Parveen, Bhumika, Mahi Thapa, Palak Basson, Tanisha Kalsi, Samaksh Basson, Dikshit, Shinee, Sukriti, Urvashi, Umang, Sneha Bhagat, Jia Sharma, Mahi Basson, Shubham Basson, Bhawna, Madhavi Kalsi, Laksh Uttam, Sharma Parveen, Hargun Basson, Deepanshu Majhotra, Satinder Lochan, Tania Bhardwaj, Roshni, Gunju Kumari, Khushi, Mannat, Shubham Bhardwaj, Jyoti, Saanvi, Angel Thapa, Khushi, Janvi Gupta, Pragati, Shreya, Suhani Thapa and Nikhil Menia and they were all felicitated.
