BIS, KVK organise awareness programme for farmers

SAMBA, Feb 22: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Samba organized an awareness programme for the progressive farmers of Samba district here, today.
The programme was attended by more than 80 farmers from different villages and KVK officials.
The chief guest of the occasion Dr. S.K.Gupta, Director Extension, SKUAST-J highlighted the need of Indian Standards in food and agricultural commodities. He disseminated the information among the farmers about the role of Indian Standards in attaining sustainable agriculture. He also stressed on Post Production Agriculture activities, marketing and branding of the farm produce in order to make agriculture more profitable.
Dr. Vinod Gupta, Senior Scientist & Head KVK Samba in his welcome address gave a brief outline of the awareness programme. He also informed about the various ongoing activities and trainings for farmers being organized programmes by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Samba.
During the programme, Satyadeo Lal, Head BIS JKBO said that agriculture is a backbone of Indian economy which provides employment to more than 40 percent people. He further said that the BIS is the quality ecosystem of the country and has formulated more than 1000 standards covering all aspects of agriculture from “Farm to Fork”.
Nisha Bura, Scientist-D, BIS JKBO in her presentation detailed about Indian Standards formulation process, ISI Mark Certification Schemes and Indian Standards published in the field of food and agriculture. She also demonstrated ‘BIS Care App through which information on Indian Standards, ISI mark, Hallmark scheme can be easily assessed.
