LeT behind attack, PSO suspended: IGP

Srinagar, Aug 9: Militants today shot dead Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) local leader and his wife at Lal Chowk in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Militants barged into the rented accommodation of BJP leader Ghulam Rasool Dar at Lal Chowk in Anantnag town and fired indiscriminately at him and his wife.
The militants fled from the spot on a motor cycle after carrying out the attack, leaving the husband and wife in a pool of blood.
Dar, who was Sarpanch and his wife Jawahira, who was also Panch of Redwani village in Kulgam district were removed to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag Hospital for treatment. However, both were declared as brought dead by the doctors at the hospital.

Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said that the couple was earlier staying in a secure hotel at Kulgam. “They were allowed to stay at their house on their request for which they had also given undertaking”, he said.
The IGP who visited the spot said Lashkar-e-Toiba was behind the attack.
Kumar said that two bike born militants of LeT outfit were involved in this barbaric incident. He added that the operation has been launched against them.
The IGP said that Dar was also provided with one PSO who, however, was found absent from duty at the time of incident. “The PSO has been placed under suspension”, he said.
Earlier, the DIG South Kashmir and SSP Anantnag reached the spot to assess the situation.
Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. “Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime. Area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on”, a police spokesman said.
Meanwhile, leaders across the political spectrum in Jammu and Kashmir today strongly condemned the killing of a BJP Sarpanch and his wife in Anantnag, with Union Minister Dr Jitendra saying that words fail short in condemning this dastardly act, while Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha said the perpetrators will be brought to justice soon.
Strongly condemning the killing of Sarpanch from Redwani Kulgam, Ghulam Rasool Dar and his wife Jawahira in Anatnag by militants today, Union Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh in a tweet said that he was extremely shaken by this dastardly terror act in which Sarpanch and his wife Jawahira were killed. “One feels short of words in condemning the cowardly attempt to discourage the PM Narendra Modi’s determined commitment to grass root democracy in the Valley”, he added.
“I strongly condemn brutal terrorist attack on the Sarpanch Gh Rasool Dar and his wife Jawahira Banoo of Redwani Bala, Kulgam. This is an act of cowardice & perpetrators of violence will be brought to justice very soon. My deepest condolences to bereaved family in this time of grief,” the LG said on his official twitter handle.
National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah said the deceased join a long list of mainstream politicians killed for their political beliefs.
“I unequivocally condemn the assassination of Ghulam Rasool Dar & his wife. They join a long list of mainstream politicians killed for their political beliefs. My condolences to his family & colleagues. May Allah grant the departed place in Jannat,” he wrote on Twitter.
PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti said she felt sorry to hear the news of the killing.
“Extremely sorry to hear that BJP district president and his wife have been shot dead by militants today. My condolences to their families and loved ones, “she said in a tweet.
