JAMMU, Aug 15: In violation of all democratic norms, the State administration disallowed the BJP’s Kashmir unit to hoist tricolour on the occasion of Independence Day at Srinagar when the party activists led by Kashmir Incharge Dr Ali Mohd Mir was in the process of hoisting tricolor in the vicinity of TRC. They were forcibly driven away by local police and later taken into custody and shifted to Kothi Bagh Police Station, a BJP handout issued here today alleged.
It said this caused serious resentment among the BJP activists and they started protest against this unlawful arrest. After several hours of protest by the arrested activists, the police forcibly put them into security van and left at the party office at Srinagar.
Later, Dr. Ali told the press that “we had approached the administration for permission to hoist flag at Lal Chowk but the same was denied to us”. On learning about this incident, the State President Shamsher Singh Manhas expressed his serious resentment with the State Government. He said that on this day when even jail inmates are celebrating the day, the administration’s attitude has been highly objectionable.
The statement said it is pertinent to mention that State general secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul was personally in Srinagar few days back and had advised the Party activists to celebrate Independence Day in a peaceful manner but through today’s incident, the provocation came from the administration side.
BJP National Executive Member & Chief Spokesperson Dr. Jitendra Singh said that when approached, the administration failed to give any justificationfor the arrest particularly when every citizen of India enjoys right to hoist tricolor wherever he want.
