BJP weakened grass-root democracy: Manohar

KATHUA, Dec 1: Former minister and president DCC Kathua, Dr Manohar Lal Sharma accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of weakening grass-root level under the garb of the ‘Back to Village’ programme and using bureaucracy to fulfill its political motive as their own workers and ministers have failed miserably to fulfill the promises made to the general masses.
In a press statement here today, Manohar Lal said that BJP was using Government machinery to achieve political gains. He said Sarpanches and Panches had high hopes when the ‘Back to Village’ programme was started in June 2019. It was to their surprise that the issues raised during the Ist phase have not been addressed till date, but the Government again conducted Phase-2 of ‘Back to Village’ programme which proved a total mockery of the system.
There was strong resentment among the Panchayat members and general public against the Government. Now, the Sarpanches and Panches and even villagers were asking about promises made during Ist phase but the officers had no reply.
“Whatever projects were taken up during the Ist phase of `Back to Village’ programme have not been implemented at the grass-root level. And when funds had not been released for various works, announced in the first phase of “Back to Village”, then what was the fun of conducting the second phase of the programme?” Sharma asked.
He said the MGNREGA payments are still pending in crores in each block. People are waiting for their installments under Indira Awas Yojna. He said the Government has given a big hype to the ‘Back to Village’ programme and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mentioned it in “Mann Ki Baat” event, but it proved futile exercise.
