JAMMU, Nov 16: BJP has emerged as major gainer in South Kashmir districts by gaining control over nine Municipal Committees, the elections of which were held recently while the Congress has won the Municipal Council of Anantnag, Municipal Committees of Dooru-Verinag, the home constituency of PCC chief, G A Mir and Municipal Committee of Kokernag.
BJP has also managed to control three Municipal Committees of North Kashmir while the rest were bagged by Congress.
As per reports, Hilal Ahmed Shah of Congress was elected as chairman of prestigious Anantnag Municipal Council (AMC) while Muzamal Rashid Sofi also of Congress was elected its vice chairman.
Congress Councilor, Mohammed Iqbal Ahengar was elected as president of Dooru -Verinag Municipal Committee while Ghulam Ahmed Teli was elected as its vice president.
The Congress which dominated Dooru-Verinag Municipal Committee had put 14 seats in its kitty out of 17, one seat had gone to BJP and another to an Independent candidate while on one seat, the election was not held.
The Congress also dominated Kokernag Municipal Committee (KMC) where its Councilor Fayaz Ahmed Itto was elected as president and Ghulam Hassan Shaksaz as vice president.
BJP and Congress, however, made an understanding in Bijbehara Municipal Committee and decided to share the post of president and vice president for half -half term respectively.
In Bijbehara out of 13 member Committee election was only held for four seats while no body filled up the forms for rest of nine seats. Both BJP and Congress got two seats each. Congress Councilor, Shaheena Nida was elected as president while BJP’s Avtar Krishan Raina was elected as vice president after both parties reached an agreement yesterday, a BJP Councilor said.
However, BJP won the rest of the Committees in the South Kashmir. In Pahalgam BJP’s Rayees Ahmed was elected as president and Basid Ahmed as vice president yesterday. Party has seven seats in 13 member Pahalgam Municipal Committee. In Ashmuqam Municipal Committee, BJP’s Vahid Bhat was elected president while Mohammed Ashraf was elected vice president. BJP has six members in the Committee while Congress and Independents have one each.
BJP also captured the Municipal Committee Mattan in South Kashmir district of Anantnag where its Councilor Mohammed Yasin was elected as president and Subash Pandit as vice president. Out of 11 elected members, BJP has 8 members, Congress two and one is Independent.
In Devsar Municipal Committee (DMC) of Kulgam district in South Kashmir, BJP’s Mushtaq Ahmed was elected president while Imtiyaz Ahmed was elected as vice president. The party has won all the eight seats of DMC.
In Kulgam Municipal Committee, BJP’s Avinash Bhat has beeb elected president while Babloo Gosani was elected as vice president. In Kulgam MC election was held for five seats out of 13 while one Independent was elected from two seats and later he left one seat and also joined BJP.
BJP also managed to get its president and vice president elected for Qazigund Municipal Committee where it won four seats out of seven. Its candidate Shamima Bano was elected as president of Qazigund MC while Peerzada Mohammed Yasin was elected as vice president.
In Shopian Municipal Committee (SMC) where BJP has won 11 seats uncontested out of 17, its Subash Chander Kaul was elected as president and Ashok Kaul as vice president.
BJP’s Urmila Bali was elected as president in Achabal Municipal Committee while the post of vice president went to Congress. Out of five seats for which election was held for Achabal Municipal Committee, both BJP and Congress got two seats each while one seat was won by an Independent candidate.
However, the election for the post of president and vice president in Municipal Committees of Pampore and Tral in South Kashmir is yet to be held. BJP has majority in Pampore MC also.
In North Kashmir, BJP has gained control of Sopore Municipal Committee where it has got seven seats out of eight on which election was held. Sopore MC has 17 seats.
The BJP also gained control in Langate and Watergam Municipal Committees in North Kashmir while Handwara was bagged by Peoples Party of Sajjad Lone an ally of BJP. However, Congress dominated Baramulla, Uri, Tangmarg, Kupwara and Bandipora in North Kashmir.
Meanwhile, in Kishtwar Municipal Committee, NC backed Riyaz Ahmed Zargar was elected as president while Congress candidate, Firdous Ahmed was elected as vice president today.
Both got nine votes each. They were declared elected by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kishtwar, Pawan Parihar who was the election authority for conducting the elections.
