Black turmeric (Curcuma caesia Roxb.), an endangered spice is one of the Curcuma species that is most valued for its potent therapeutic qualities. It’s an erect rhizomatous herb belonging to Zingiberaceae family consisting of bluish-black rhizome because of which it is called as black turmeric. It is widely grown in several regions of India, China, Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. From Indian aspect it is native to North-East Hill region and also found in West Godavari, the Papi Hills of East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana’s Khammam district, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh. It is popularly called as Kali Haldi (Hindi), Ailaidum (Mizo), Yaimu (Manipuri), Kalahaladhi (Assamese), Kala manjal (Malayalam), Nalla pasupu (Telugu) and also known as black zedoary. The plant emits a strong camphor-like odor and boasts a range of medicinal benefits, making it a valuable resource in the pharmaceutical industry. Genetically, black turmeric is diploid, with 42 chromosomes.
