Blast accused Nachan allowed to appear before UAPA tribunal

MUMBAI, June 30: The special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court today allowed Saquib Nachan, a key accused of Mulund blast case of March 13, 2003, to appear before a special tribunal in Delhi.
“Nachan is alleged to be a member of Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), and he wants to file an application before the special tribunal set up under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, to declare that he is not a member,” sources said.
Special Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian confirmed the development.
Nachan was granted bail by the court here on January 31, 2011.
Nachan, alongwith 15 others, is facing a combined chargesheet in the Mulund, Vile Parle and Mumbai Central blast cases for offences under POTA, the Explosive Substances Act and for ‘preparation to wage war against the nation’ under the Indian Penal Code.
The Mulund blast occurred on March 13, 2003, killing 12 persons and injuring 71 in the northern suburb. Earlier, on December 6, 2002, several persons were injured in the blast at Mumbai Central station, while a person died when a bomb exploded in a market area in Vile Parle (East) on January 27, 2003.
