Horticulture is an important part of agriculture sector in the State. A large chunk of population is associated with sector. Divided into three agro-zones viz Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, a number of horticulture products are produced here. These products sustain the State economy to a great extent. But this sector has not received much attention for reasons known to people associated with this industry. There is urgent need to provide latest technical know-how to farmers so that they can get suitable price for their labour. It is quite imperative that horticulture department finds markets for this produce. As farmers fail to find markets due to lack of knowledge they get expoited by the middlemen.
Besides, there is great scope for food processing industry. This industry can flourish to great lengths as the State is visited by lakhs of pilgrims and tourists. These products can be exported as well. Needs of Army can also be met.
The only thing that is required is formulation of a policy that may take care of these aspects.
