SUCHETGARH, Sept 8: Congress leader and District Development Council (DDC) member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony has anguished over the persistent issue of unscheduled power cuts affecting the farming community of border areas, seeking immediate action to alleviate the suffering of farmers who are severely impacted by these power outages.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the blacktopping of road from Fathu Chak to Gharana, Tony emphasized the urgency of resolving the power crisis. He said that the farming community forms the backbone of our nation and their well-being directly impacts the overall growth and prosperity of our economy. However, the unreliable and erratic electricity supply in the border areas, creating unscheduled power cuts, has made it increasingly challenging for these hardworking farmers to tend to their crops and sustain their livelihoods.
Tony lamented the dire consequences faced by the farmers due to these power outages, which not only disrupt daily activities on farmlands but also have a significant impact on crop productivity. The farmers, who heavily rely on water pumps, irrigation systems and other electric-powered machinery, are disproportionately affected by these frequent power cuts.
Expressing gratitude to Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta for approving the double-lane road from Suchetgarh Octori Post to Gharana, Tony shed light on the challenges faced by the people of Gharana due to migratory birds. He highlighted that a significant chunk of land, which is cultivated for wheat, becomes food for migratory birds, causing significant losses for farmers. In order to compensate for these losses, he called for the Government to announce an employment package for all affected farmers, giving them priority in employment opportunities.
The Congress leader commended the resilience of the people of Suchetgarh, who continuously face challenges such as Pakistan firing, mining, and destructive rains that have damaged crops. He emphasized that the power sector is now adding to the burdens faced by farmers in the region, with unscheduled power cuts becoming a daily occurrence in the border areas.
