Many of us, today talk about the barriers which are encountered in the economic journey of our developing nation ‘India’. There are some barriers which once removed will double or maybe triple the pace of the progress of our nation, and one of such barriers is, brain drain. According to Merriam-webster brain drain is; the departure of educated or professional people from one country, economic sector, or field for another usually for better pay or living conditions, this means only a person who thinks that he can get better in life by settling in another country will migrate and practice brain drain. This means, they think that they are overqualified for the job and are meant for a better one. Some of them go as students too, who once get their degree become unwilling to return to India.
This is not completely the fault of the person migrating but also the fault of the system, because they fail to provide the best what a qualified person can get. The salary which a Government employee gets is quite insufficient as the employees complain, which is because of corruption and black money, as the black money doesn’t come in circulation with the Government. Not only corruption and black money but there are many more factors which contribute to this. We should also know that the students who study in the best Government institutes of India pay a very nominal fee because a part of their fee is paid be the Government itself. And when students from such institutions leave India, they not only work for the betterment of the other country but also the part of fee, which is paid by the Government, goes in vain. Therefore, brain drain affects the economy of the native country.
A recent study conducted by Indian Institute of Management- Bangalore (IIM-B) shows that the students going for higher studies abroad has increased by 256 percent in the last 10 years. When 53,000 Indian students went abroad for higher studies in 2000, the figure shot up to 1.9 lakh in 2010. Also a report by Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) pointed out that when a large number of students flock to foreign universities, it costs India a whopping Rs. 95,000 crores per year. Also when the students go to another country for studying, they prefer staying back in that country because by that time those students get an exposure at global level. And after getting introduced to the high quality life and facilities, the students become reluctant to return to the home country. The developed countries have started acting like organizations these days. They attract the highly skilled and qualified people from other countries when they fail to find good, talented and skilled workers in their country. Here, India is the loser and developed countries like the US, Germany, France and UK are gainers.
Indian Government has taken many steps to prevent brain drain, research investment is also being made to come up with quality inventions to attract more students to take up research programs. But the question arises, is this effort much enough? The answer comes out as ‘no’. Government should consider increasing the salary of its employees and providing sufficient facilities so as to attract the youth. This raise in income can only be done by keeping a check on the black money and corruption. Special policies should be made for this, which should make the youth reluctant to leave their country and serve another. This cannot be done just by one person, so therefore, special departments should be made which would look after new ways and ideas to prevent brain drain. Not only the salary but Government should also look after the working conditions of their employees and make them better.
The destiny of any country’s economy lies in the hands of not only the Government but also the youth, and if the youth has a mindset of leaving their country for better lifestyle and salary, then they need to be stopped. People prefer complaining and running away from the country rather than staying in the country and serving it to make a better tomorrow for the next generation to live. And not only this, why not we make our country a hub for brain gain from other countries. And as we know, every problem has a solution; this problem too has a solution. A sense of patriotism is required in the youth, which can only be spread through awareness. The people of a country should feel for their nation, they should treat it like their own home. And it is the need of this time; proper steps should be taken not just to lower the rate of brain drain but to put a complete stop over it. This means that a team work is required, so there should be a proper collaboration between the Government and the citizens, both of them should support and cooperate each other to make things move in a streamlined and smooth way.
There may be many obstacles in this journey, but dedicated services and patriotic zeal will help India to rise above the hindrances and restore to her lost glory. It is already a high time now, if we want our country not only to run in the race of development with other countries, but to excel it, we will have to take initiatives and raise awareness among the citizens. An awareness, which induces a sense of patriotism among us, so that every citizen dedicates his life for the betterment of our country. Our mother India has never lacked in any resource, so it is time to utilize every single resource and every single brain to take our nation to new heights and make our country a benchmark of development and prosperity.
