Brainstorming workshop on climate change concludes at SKUAST-J

JAMMU, Dec 8: Brain storming workshop on climate change and its impact on hill agriculture concluded at SKUAST-Jammu, here today.
Prof. Pradeep K Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu, was chief guest during the valedictory session while Promod Jain, Financial Commissioner, Agriculture Production Department was the guest of honor.
Eminent experts from across the country participated in the brain storming session where in every aspect of climate change was discussed with special emphasis regarding its impact on agriculture and livelihood security.
Prof Pradeep K Sharma, in his lead lecture, gave an overview of the climate change and global warming viz a viz. Hill Agriculture. He advocated that climate change is not a myth but a reality and is happening at a very alarming rate.
Promod Jain, in his address,   sought the expertise from the scientist experts to come up with the magnitude of the likely impacts of climate change in J&K. He stressed that actionable policy transformation is required to tackle the problem of climate change.
Dr. Anand K. Sharma, Regional Coordinator, Central & Western Himalays, IMD gave detailed account of various meteorological parameters with respect to NW Himalayas in general and J&K in particular.
Dr R S Rana CSHPKV (H.P), was of the opinion that scientists should differentiate between climate variability and climate change. Dr  S.K  Chauhan, Director CAZRI, Leh advocated that researchers and administrators network should be put in place for generation and sharing of data for formulation and execution of coping strategies to offset the impacts of climate change.   Dr. N.K. Sharma, Head, Soil Science, ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun,  stressed to have climate resilient technologies to be adopted for mitigating climatic change effects.  Dr.A.S.Nain,  Chief Agrometrologist Pantnagar University,  elaborated about role of impact studies which are needed to be initiated in the form of collaborative/network projects for the hilly States.
Dr J P Sharma,  Director Research,  advised the stakeholders to devise in advance keeping in view the likely impact of climate on the livestock productivity with respect to milk, meat and egg production as well as in agricultural and horticultural crops.
