LOS ANGELES, Nov 22: Actress Brie Larson, whose portrayal of a young woman held hostage with her son in “Room” has earned her the best notices of her career, will be honoured with breakthrough performance award at Palm Springs International Film Festival.
The 26-year-old actress will pick up the honour at the 27th annual PSIFF Awards Gala on January 2. The fest runs January 1-11, said The Hollywood Reporter.
“Brie Larson breathes vibrant life into the character of Ma from Emma Donoghue’s best-selling novel Room,” said PSIFF chairman Harold Matzner.
“Larson delivers a performance of great warmth, deep reserves of courage and strong empathy as a committed parent determined to make sure her son is taken care of under unimaginable circumstances.”
Previous recipients of the award include Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Hudson, Felicity Huffman, Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike and Jeremy Renner.
In the year they were honoured, Cotillard, Hudson and Nyong’o went on to win an Oscar, while Huffman, Pike and Renner were nominated.
The fest previously announced that “Black Mass” lead actor Johnny Depp will receive its Desert Palm Achievement Award (Actor), “Carol” and “Truth” star Cate Blanchett will receive its Desert Palm Achievement Award (Actress); and Brooklyn lead actress Saoirse Ronan will receive its International Star Award.
The festival will announce its other honorees in the coming days and weeks. (PTI)
