SRINAGAR: A Border Roads Organisation (BRO) driver was killed after a snow avalanche hit Zojilla on Srinagar-Leh national highway, the only road connecting the Union Territory of Ladakh with Kashmir valley.
Meanwhile, traffic was on Thursday suspended on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh highway though snow clearance operation has been taken up to clear the avalanche and put through the road for vehicular movement.
A BRO vehicle was hit by a snow avalanche last night near Zojilla. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Ghulam Rasool Bhat, was buried alive under the avalanche, they said.
A search and rescue operation was immediately launched by the BRO and police personnel. The body of the deceased was later retriever under several feet of snow.
Post-mortem of the deceased was not done so far as such facilities were not available in the area. “The BRO employees are upset as the body was lying in the medical facility since last night without doctors performing postmortem,” the sources said.
After completing all the legal and medical formalities, the body would be handed over to his relatives for last rites at his native place in Gagangir. (AGENCIES)
