SRINAGAR, Feb 26: Project Beacon of Border Roads Organization (BRO) rose to occasion and despite numerous challenges and difficulties worked relentlessly this winter to fight the heaviest snowfall in recent times in Kashmir valley.
With their advance planning and strategic placement of snow clearance equipment, Project Beacon ensured that the road closure due to snow accumulation is minimal on important Jammu – Srinagar Highway (Quazigund – Banihal section) and Jawahar Tunnel which is under Project Beacon.
The other sections of Jammu – Srinagar National Highway are with NHAI for its development to four lane specification, maintenance and snow clearance and BRO is working in full coordination with NHAI to ensure that connectivity to Kashmir valley is least disrupted.
On Srinagar Airfield, Project Beacon deployed state of the art imported snow clearance equipment and carried most of the operations during night to ensure zero closure of the runway. It was for the first time that Beacon endeavored to connect Gurez during peak winter month of January and also successfully stage forwarded equipments to Sonamarg to facilitate early connectivity to Leh and opening of Zojila.
In all over 100 snow clearance equipments were pressed in services by Beacon. Most of their snow clearance operations were done in total synergy with the local civil administration to facilitate connectivity to local civil population in far flung areas of Kashmir valley.
