The protest brought to light the fact that, despite currently having two batches of BSc Nursing students enrolled and a third batch set to begin soon, GMC Rajouri lacks the basic facilities necessary for proper education. The students alleged that absence of classrooms and sufficient staff has severely hindered their studies.
To further highlight their plight, the students protested in front of the Rajouri District Development Commissioner’s office and communicated their demands to the district administration. District Commissioner (DC) of Rajouri Om Prakash Bhagat assured the students that their issues would be resolved within ten days.
In response to the protest, Principal of GMC Rajouri Prof (Dr) A S Bhatia stated that the Government of J&K has initiated the establishment of various BSc Nursing and BSc Paramedical colleges in different districts of the Jammu division, including Rajouri, Kathua, Udhampur, Reasi, and Doda. The Government has also forwarded a proposal for the permanent recruitment of faculty in these colleges.
Principal GMC Rajouri Prof (Dr) A S Bhatia informed that currently, 7 MSc and BSc tutors have been deputed to teach the students. He added that a new building, which will be well-equipped with all necessary facilities including laboratories, classrooms, and staff rooms, has been constructed and the students will be shifted to this building in the coming days.
He acknowledged the initial challenges faced on starting new institutions but emphasized the Government’s commitment to prioritizing the Peer Panjal area by establishing a medical college and a BSc nursing college for its residents. The Principal has scheduled a meeting with the protesting students for tomorrow at 1 PM in his office chamber to address their grievances properly.
