JAMMU, Oct 20: The BSF last night achieved major success when it thwarted an infiltration attempt by six Pakistani militants at the International Border (IB) in Bobiya area of Hiranagar sector in Kathua district, killing one militant and forcing others to retreat. This was the first infiltration attempt by a big group of Pakistani militants on the IB post September 29 surgical strikes by the Indian Army inside Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), which had led to tension on the Line of Control (LoC).
“It was a ‘forced infiltration’ attempt by six militants, all of whom resorted to indiscriminate and heavy volume of firing on the night patrol vehicle of the BSF, which was led by a Company Commander, and tried to infiltrate. However, alert BSF jawans thwarted the attempt by retaliating very effectively,” IG BSF, Jammu Frontiers, DK Upadhyaya told the Excelsior after visiting the spot in Hiranagar sector, where the infiltration attempt took place at 11.55 pm last night.
Upadhyaya said the militants, who had clear backing of the Pakistani Rangers, opened indiscriminate and random firing with RPGs (Rocket Projectile Guns), as is done in the ‘forced infiltration’ (fire and sneak-in). However, the BSF jawans, who were maintaining high alert along the International Border, immediately understood the militants’ strategy and gave befitting response to heavy volume of firing.
The exchange of firing lasted for few minutes after which the militants fled back to Pakistan taking along with them the body of one of their dead colleagues. The BSF jawans, in the morning, watched the video footage of entire encounter and saw the militants retreated to Pakistan lifting one of their colleagues. While one of the militants was confirmed dead, one or two others might have survived with minor injuries.
Upadhyaya said the involvement of Pakistani Rangers in the ‘forced infiltration’ was very much clear.
“The militants were infiltrating from the spot, which was located between two posts of the Rangers, which clearly indicated that the Rangers were well aware of the infiltration plot, or, had rather, facilitated the plot,” he said, adding that the militants can’t come so close to the border without help of the Rangers.
Asserting that it is very tough to foil the `forced infiltration’, the IG BSF Jammu Frontiers, said the BSF has done extremely good job by not allowing even a single militant to infiltrate into this side. He said there were no casualties on the BSF side though the militants fired heavily at the BSF’s night patrol vehicle, which was being led by the Company Commander, at Bobiya in Hiranagar sector of Kathua district.
Upadhyaya said the BSF would give befitting reply to the militants in their further infiltration attempts also in the language they understand.
“We are fully prepared. Our response to the militants would be same as it was last night. We will not allow any militants to infiltrate,” he added.
Official sources said the militants were well prepared for the infiltration, which was evident from the fact that they used RPG shells followed by heavy firing with automatic weapons on the BSF night patrol. The militants were heavily equipped with automatic weapons.
Sources said a major terror plot on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway has been foiled by the BSF by thwarting infiltration attempt of the militants. The security installations are on target of the militants.
The BSF had also foiled an infiltration attempt along the IB in Akhnoor sector on September 23 by apprehending Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operative Abdul Qayum. The BSF would lodge strong protest with the Rangers through the flag meeting on infiltration attempts of the militants facilitated by them, sources said.
Meanwhile, heavy mortar shelling and firing by the Pakistan army along LoC in Balakote and Manjakote sectors of Poonch and Rajouri districts continued intermittently throughout the last night. It stopped at 7 am today.
Some structures suffered minor damage in the shelling but there were no casualties on the Indian side of Army and civilians. Several mortar shells landed inside the populated villages in Manjakote sector during the night, sources said.
