JAMMU, Oct 14: Pakistani Rangers today fired a sniper shot on a Border Security Force (BSF) post followed by heavy firing on forward pickets of the security forces at Durmey Chak in Ghagwal area of Samba sector this morning causing injuries to a BSF jawan.
Official sources said the BSF jawan M Basu Raj, a constable of 9 BSF, was manning forward post (Katao) at Durmey Chak when a sniper fire hit him in the abdomen causing him serious injuries.
The sniper fire was followed by heavy firing from the Rangers in Durmey Chak at about 11.30 am. The BSF jawans retaliated, leading to heavy exchanges that continued till 12.20 pm.
Injured BSF jawans was evacuated by his colleagues from the forward post and shifted to District Hospital Samba from where he was referred to Government Medical College (GMC) here. He was operated upon and was responding to the treatment.
Sources said exchange of firing between the BSF and Rangers continued for 50 minutes.
Though the ceasefire violations and firing have almost become a regular feature on the Line of Control (LoC) especially in Poonch district, it was after nearly 10 days that the Rangers violated ceasefire on the International Border and resorted to firing on the forward posts of BSF.
The BSF had injured and captured a Pakistani infiltrator at Paharpur in Hiranagar sector last week. He had later been handed over to local police.
Meanwhile, the BSF is likely to seek a flag meeting with Pakistani Rangers to lodge strong protest mover today’s firing at Samba sector in which a BSF jawan was seriously injured.
Sources said this was the third incident of sniper fire from Pakistan side this year along the International Border and cannot be taken lightly as there have been increased activities by militants from across the border.
“BSF is likely to seek a flag meeting with Pakistani Rangers to lodge a strong protest,” sources said, adding the BSF would ask the Rangers to mend their ways or face the consequences.
There had been reports that a number of militants were sitting across the International Border awaiting an opportunity to sneak into this side. On September 26, three militants had intruded into this side and attacked Hiranagar police station and Mehsar Army camp at Samba killing 10 persons before being eliminated by the security personnel at the Army camp.
