Burning of Schools

Sir,
This has reference to the editorial’Enemies of Education'(DE, Nov 3, 2016). It is sad that about 30 school buildings have been torched in different parts of Kashmir valley over the last 3-4 months.Schools are called the  ‘temples of learning’ and the Union and the State governments have  opened schools in every nook and corner, provided adequate staff and made other elaborate arrangements to ensure that every child is provided quality education near his /her home. The government has also implemented various schemes such as SSA, RMSA, RUSA, etc to enable every child to have access to free and quality education at various levels.Education is a potent weapon of social change and it leads one from darkness to light. There have been instances where NGOs and other philanthropic organisations have opened schools to impart free education to children.Imparting education to children has always been considered a noble and virtuous act as it is the bliss of education which enlightens the children and refines his/her skills and abilities. But unfortunately some enemies of humanity are indulging themselves in the reprehensible act of burning the school buildings  in Kashmir, which have been built after a lot of planning, hardwork and by spending huge funds. The government is reported to have arrested some people in this connection. It is high time that various social and religious organisations, political parties and  the public in  general came forward to help the government check this abominable trend of burning school buildings. The High Court of J&K has also intervened and directed the government to take measures to ensure the safety and security of the educational institutions which have been the target of the anti-social elements who are hell bent at spoiling the future of innocent students. It is hoped that a better sense will also  prevail upon the arsonists and they will stop this reprehensible act of torching school buildings to let the innocent children acquire the light of knowledge and thus, better their future and life. They have already suffered a lot due to the ongoing unrest across the Valley and they should not be made to suffer more for no fault of theirs.
Yours etc….
Ashok Sharma,
Udhampur.
