Srinagar, Mar 12: National Conference (NC) vice-president and former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, today said that the Central Government has given the gift of Ramadan to the Muslims of the country by implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)-2019.
Speaking to the media persons outside the party headquarters at Nawa-e-Subh Complex, Abdullah noted that Muslims have been the main target of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), emphasizing that even in the CAA, Muslims have been targeted.

“Before the elections, they have given a Ramadan gift to the Muslims of this country by notifying the CAA. This is nothing new from the BJP because that’s what they have been doing, especially with the Muslims of this country,” he said.
The former CM said that the Act was passed in 2019, and in 2024, right before the conduct of elections, comes the notification of CAA, which, he said, reveals their intent.
Abdullah underlined that the sudden decision and implementation of the CAA after several years of its enactment by the Parliament makes the Government’s intent clear. “It is apparent that the BJP wants to play the religion card in the upcoming elections,” he said.
The NC leader mentioned that while the BJP has been claiming that they will win big in the upcoming elections, with the inauguration of the Ram Mandir apparently boosting their popularity. He observed that they (BJP) have realized something, prompting them to resort to actions like the CAA.
“I am surprised that the BJP was claiming to win 400 seats. They were saying that after the Ram Mandir, they won’t lose. But somehow, they have realized that their position is weak, and that’s why they are resorting to new gimmicks.”
Regarding the NC’s meeting with the team of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Omar stated that representatives from the party met them and advocated for conducting Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously. “We have presented our view; let’s see what they will do in this regard.”
