JAMMU, Aug 12: How the human psyche goes beyond human control when it comes to clinching success in life by any mean was the central core theme of the play “Cactus” which was performed at Abhinav Theatre today under the directorship of Neha Lahotra.
Taking its mythical origin in the year 1950, when medical science was not advanced upto matching of DNAs to establish rapes, the play signified the most horrid attempt by a human being to castrate himself to escape the wrath and make it a stepping stone to his successful career ahead.
Dr Raj Oberoi rises to unprecedented heights of success through a professional gimmick of castration done upon himself when he finds his beloved bearing a child in her womb and likely to create trouble. Sheetal, his wife, ignorant of the fact persuades him to file a divorce as she thinks herself to be barren unable to bear a child.
Raj, knowingly that divorce may lead to the truth coming out in open does all means to save the situation until a stranger in Deepak Agnihotri shows in and slowly and gradually the truth unveils that leads to a hell breaking loose upon Raj Oberoi.
The climax of the play becomes the decider for Raj Oberoi after being pursued by his ‘inner conscious’ to take up suicide as glorified way to end the system. The production was held under Rangshala Theatre Group of Society.
Neha Lahotra, director of the play performed the role of subdued wife Sheetal through an emphatic presence of her acting prowess that beat the doubts of her being the numero uno stage actor.
Varun Sharma who adapted and tailored Dr. Raj Oberoi’s surgical moves took the main lead and reins of the play through his histrionics leaving an indelible mark of a great actor. The showing in of a stranger in Sushil Raina as Deepak Agnihotri took the play’s morale into cloud nine as he tune the character to his precision best and drew unprecedented accolades. Vansheen Verma as Mrs Taneja too was a surprise package of acting gift as her modulated dialogues left lasting impressions on the audience.
Anoop Goswami, the state’s new find on theatrical milieu has , off late, proved his ineffaceable mark of a towering spectacular persona gave a memorable performance as ‘inner conscience’ of Dr Raj Oberoi. Anoop defied last iota of doubt that his acting dexterity is far beyond the consideration of any other soul in the field.
Set and costumes were designed by Shalini Sharma, while music was ably produced by Lokesh. Pankaj Sharma’s light designs were impeccable.
