JAMMU, Oct 30: A cancer awareness program was organized in Gaink Panchayat of Kot Bhalwal block here today.
As per a statement, the program was organised by Dr Navneet Kaur, founder and chairperson of NGO Support. This initiative was co-hosted in collaboration with Rotary Club Jammu Bahu, specialists from Shankus Cancer Hospital, and the medical team of SDH Bhalwal.
The program saw enthusiastic participation from ASHA workers and a considerable number of women from the rural areas of Bhalwal Block and Mathwar Block, all associated with the Umeed Group.
Highlighting the importance of the event, Dr Navneet said that October is breast cancer awareness month. She expressed her commitment to work closely with esteemed Government and private institutions through her NGO to disseminate the vital message of cancer awareness.
Distinguished experts in the field of cancer, including Dr Paras Khanna (MCh Surgical Oncology), Dr Gurpreet Kaur (Head & Neck Cancer Surgeon), and Dr Vikas Heer (Gynae Onco Surgeon), shared insights into commonly occurring cancers, their risk factors, and the significance of prevention and early detection.
Dr Paras particularly emphasized the prevention of cervical cancer, advocating for cervical cancer vaccination for girls aged 9-14 and cervical cancer screening (PAP smear) every three years for women.
Dr Ira, a senior Anaesthesia consultant at SDH Kot Bhalwal, encouraged ASHA workers and Umeed volunteers to seek consultation for PAP smears at SDH Kot Bhalwal. Representatives from Rotary Club Jammu Bahu, Adeep Singh Mehta, and Harpreet Singh emphasized the pivotal role of Asha workers as “community campaigners” in disseminating cancer awareness.
Dr Navneet expressed her gratitude to all participants and announced a collective effort in the coming weeks to raise awareness, provide cervical cancer vaccinations, and conduct cervical cancer screenings in January, celebrated as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
