This has reference to startling regulations in the print media with regard to the steep rise in the number of cancer patients all over the country especially in J&K state. This is a matter of grave concern for one and all which warrants immediate attention and fool proof follow up action on war footing. Simply passing the buck to the Government shall not serve the purpose. Of course, we owe greater responsibility for providing the best of health care facilities, preventive as well as administering the effective treatment after the deadly disease has been contracted. The concerned authorities are well advised to be fully awake to the threat perception of monster of cancer ambushing to devour the poor and hapless victims. A massive awareness campaign is required to be promptly launched to educate the public about the contributing factors, dos and don’ts and enlightening them to develop a healthy lifestyle. The other burning issue is the dire scarcity of well equipped cancer institutes for early diagnosis and providing specialised treatment to the patients.
It is heartening to know that a super specialty hospital has been put in place in Jammu which would be of immense help to the needy. Similarly, the authorities must mull and painstakingly materialise the idea of building a high tech cancer hospital in Jammu to save the people from the menace of this deadly disease. A visit to the Ankur Unit of GMC hospital makes one desolate and deeply sad to see the pathetic condition of patients. It is high time to address this issue as first and foremost priority. This scourge is fastly engulfing the rural folk as well. This is due to the change of lifestyle in villages. The Government, NGOs and the educated youth must make coordinated efforts to save the society from the burgeoning onslaught of cancer. The principle of “prevention is better than cure” may be religiously followed. The common masses must choose healthy diet, avoiding mismatch of conflicting food products, regular exercise and top of all, a sustained practice of Yoga is the best and most efficacious option for developing strong immune system to ward off the invasion of cancer on human body.
