SRINAGAR, Mar 28: In what could be called as blatant violation of University Grants Commission (UGC) norms for the post of Lecturer and Assistant Professors on contractual basis, the Department of Journalism, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora has preferred simple Masters Degree holders over the candidates who have qualified Nation Eligibility Test (NET) to teach in the Journalism Department for 2013 academic calendar.
A group of candidates who have qualified NET last year have applied for vacant teaching posts at IUST, Awantipora for current academic year, told Excelsior that they were dropped from the interview and influential students were preferred.
The drop out candidates said: “The varsity has called 28 candidates for interview, which included candidates with Ph.D, M.Phil and NET and even few of them having years of experience in the filed of media, but still were dropped only to accommodate their favorite ones.”
They accused the University authorities for selecting two candidates who were neither NET qualified and had low percentage in their Masters degree as compared to others.
Professor A R Trag, Vice Chancellor, IUST, said the allegation levelled against the selection process was baseless: He said that those candidates were selected who had teaching experience, publication, research paper and high percentage of marks.
“We tried our best to select candidates purely on merit basis, no doubt there is only female candidate without NET qualification, but she has three years of teaching experience,” Professor Trag said.
