Cases registered against company for supplying spurious drugs

SRINAGAR, Apr 4: Minister for Medical Education, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, today directed registration of cases against the company that supplied spurious drugs to the hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir and asked the health department officials to investigate the matter.
The Minister took strong note of the Antibiotic procured for Jammu and Kashmir hospitals that tested negative. He described the procuring of such a drug as criminal act and directed for lodging of criminal cases against the company that supplied the drug.
The Minister directed the Principal Government Medical College, Jammu and Medical Superintendent, Lal Ded Hospital, Srinagar to lodge FIRs against the drug company. He has asked the Principal Government College, Srinagar to lodge the FIR against the company after getting a formal copy of the laboratory report.
The Minister told Excelsior that timely detection of these spurious drugs have saved many lives. He said that these medicines are generally used for post-operative care mostly in caesarean cases.
Minister revealed that the drug was also supplied to the State Assembly dispensary. “They didn’t even spare the lawmakers. These drugs have been supplied to the Assembly dispensary also for last two years”, he added.
The Minister said that it is shocking that the drug contained zero per cent of the salt when the company claimed it contained 500 milligrams of amoxicillin. He said that strong action will be taken against anyone who would be found involved.
The Minister said that drug was seized from Lal Ded Hospital and Gousia Hospitals in Srinagar and SMGS hospital Jammu where it was already in use. He said that 347 strips of the spurious anti biotic was seized from SMGS hospital, 500 from Lal Ded Hospital after it tested negative. He said that around 39000 tablets have been already consumed by the patients across the State.
The anti-biotic Maximizen is manufactured by a Himachal based Company and marketed by a Bombay Based company and its dealer is Life Line Pharma.  The drug was purchased after it was passed for use in hospitals by the department’s Purchasing committee of Jammu Province and Purchasing Committee of Health and Medical Education department.
The company claimed that the drug contains 500 milligrams of Amoxicillin tri-hydrate + 125 milligrams clavulanic acid but when tested it was found that it contained zero per cent Amoxicillin.
