JAMMU, Dec 16: Casual labourers, daily rated and need base workers of the PW(R&B) Department, Jammu province today held strong protest demonstration in support of their pending demands.

A large number of these workers under the banner of Casual Labour Union of the Public Works Department led by its president, Satish Sharma assembled outside the office of Chief Engineer PW(R&B) Department, at Lok Nirman Bhawan, Rail Head Complex, Jammu at around 11 am today and started protest demonstration. They were carrying banners and placards in their hands.
They pointed out that many workers are working in different capacities in the R&B for the last over two decades, but the authorities despite assurances have failed to frame a definite Regularisation Policy for them.
They were shouting slogans in support of their demands. They projected the demand of regularization of all the daily rated/casual workers/labourers, computer operators, cooks, drasftsmen, drivers etc. They claimed that they all are still waiting for their regularisation. There are total 2272 such workers in the R&B but they have no social security as well.
Sharma pointed out that many workers died during turmoil and other due to natural death but they were not provided any death benefits as being provided to other Government employees. He demanded that their dependants are left to suffer. They should also be provided benefit of SRO-43/ engagement in the job after death of bread earning member working in the department.
After staging protest dharna for over two-three hours, they dispersed. Besides president, several other members of the Union also spoke on the occasion.
