Casual sweepers hold protest

Srinagar, Feb 22: Scores of casual sweepers working in Urban Local Body Department protested here today, demanding that their services be regularized and that the minimum wage act be implemented.
Casual labourers gathered at Partap Park, Press Enclave, here raising slogans in support of their demands. They argued that their services should be either regularised under SRO-64 or subject to the minimum wage act.
The protestors said they have raised the matter with different governments in the last two decades, but none has done anything. “We have raised the issue with different governments in the last two decades, but none has done anything,” Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh, a protestor, claimed.
The women protestors lamented their inability to run their houses owing to low pay. “We have been working on modest earnings for the previous fifteen years. We want the government to consider our family, “Shaheena, another protestor said.
