JAMMU, May 3: The Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) today conducted simultaneous raids at Udhampur, Pathankote, Noida and Gurgaon in connection with a corruption case in Army supplies against Maj Gen VK Sharma, posted in Army Supplies Corps at Northern Command, Udhampur.
The CBI teams under the supervision of SP CBI Dr Armandeep Singh conducted simultaneous raids at office and residences of Maj Gen Sharma and seized some incriminating documents.
The raids were completed at Northern Command office of the Major General at 6 pm while at other places, the raids concluded at 2 pm.
Reliable sources said the CBI has registered a case under various provisions of anti-corruption law and Maj Gen Sharma on the charges of allegedly taking corruption from the contractors in Army supplies.
Simultaneously, Army had also initiated a Court of Inquiry against its officer, which was in progress, sources said.
They added that some of the contractors had approached the CBI and gave them evidence of corruption against the Army officer. The CBI investigated the complaints and found evidence in them after which a case was registered against the Army officers and investigations were taken up.
“During searches, the CBI has seized some important documents pertaining to the supplies. After the searches were over, the CBI would start scrutiny of the documents,” sources said.
However, they pointed out that the Army officer hasn’t been called for questioning so far but they didn’t rule out the questioning at a later stage during investigations of the case.
Sources noted that there had been allegations of corruption leveled by various contractors assigned with the supplies to the Northern Command in Udhampur.
Sources said the Army had also initiated the Court of Inquiry into the complaints of similar nature made by the contractors against Maj Gen Sharma.
Meanwhile, in another case of corruption against five to six senior officers of Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the CBI has completed its inquiry.
There had been charges of corruption against three Brigadiers, two Colonels and some other officers, previously posted at Leh with BRO.
The CBI had deputed Inspector Kamal Sangra for investigations of the corruption charges against the BRO officers. Sources said Inspector Sangra has submitted his report on the corruption charges to the CBI officers.
Further action against the BRO officers would be taken based on the inquiry report, sources said.
Meanwhile, another team headed by an Inspector from Kashmir wing of the CBI was also in Leh in connection with corruption charges in the BRO.
PTI adds from New Delhi:
The Army today handed over a case to CBI to probe allegations charges of bribery and disproportionate assets against a serving Major General.
Maj Gen V K Sharma, has been attached in Udhampur-based Northern Command since last year where he was facing a Court of Inquiry (CoI).
According to CBI sources, the CoI has recommended a CBI probe against the senior officer and the probe agency now plans to register a case based on the findings of the Army inquiry.
There were allegations by a supplier against the officer, who was a Maj Gen at Army Service Corps (ASC), of financial impropriety in a contract case.
The officer was in charge of all rations and supplies to troops posted in the Northern Command. He was attached for the probe after an elaborate internal surveillance tracked his activities.
