VIJAYAWADA, Oct 15: Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham, affiliated to the CPI(M), has demanded the Centre to direct the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to open purchase centres for the commodity in the state to protect the farmers from middlemen.
Though the minimum support price (MSP) announced by the central government for cotton is Rs 4,100 per quintal, the traders and middlemen purchase the material only at Rs 2,500-3,000, Rythu Sangham’s Krishna District Secretary Y Kesava Rao said in a statement issued here today.
Amid the present market conditions for cotton, farmers incur huge losses, he added.
Rao said if the government does not take initiatives to purchase cotton, its growers may be forced to commit suicide. (PTI)
