CEA accords clearance to Kiru Hydroelectric Project

JAMMU, Mar 24:  Chenab Valley Power Projects Pvt Ltd  crossed another milestone with approval of Techno Economic Appraisal (TEA) of  Kiru Hydro-electric Project.
The CVPP is a joint venture of  NHPC Ltd, JKSPDC and PTC India Ltd. Giving a boost to the aspirations of Jammu & Kashmir State, Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has accorded clearance to 624 MW Kiru Hydro-electric Project. This decision was taken during appraisal of project DPR in the 335th meeting of CEA held on 22.01.2016. Minutes of the meeting conveying recommendation for clearance were issued recently by CEA.
With this clearance, the hope of adding 624 MW of power has been strengthened which can be realised in near future by CVPP.  Kiru  Project shall be constructed on river Chenab in Tehsil Nagseni in District Kishtwar. The project is considered as a major milestone towards optimum utilisation of  the vast hydro power potential of Chenab river, most of which is still untapped.
The project has been approved by CEA with an installed capacity of 624 MW having four units of 156 MW each. The major project components shall include a concrete gravity dam with height of   135 m from deepest foundation level across river Chenab, water conductor system, underground power house on left bank and four tail race tunnels. The  estimated cost of project is  Rs 4640.88 crore and project completion period is 54 months.
While granting clearance, it was recommended by CEA that CVPP shall comply with the guidelines of Ministry of Water Resources for project design and shall ensure adequate E-flow for different seasons as prescribed by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change particularly during lean flow season. It was also recommended that CVPP shall submit the copies of various other clearances to CEA viz Environment clearance, international clearance under Indus Water Treaty, clearance from Ministry of Home Affairs etc.
Regarding Kiru HE Project, the Forest clearance, Defense clearance and Environment clearance have already been approved by the respective authorities.
