LEH, Mar 18: In a bid to arrange alternative transportation for thousands of stranded passengers from Ladakh mainly students studying outside Ladakh, CEC LAHDC Leh Rigzin Spalbar called on GOC, 14 Corps, Lt. Gen. Rakesh Sharma requesting him for special Army flights from Chandigarh.
CEC said that exorbitant air fares charged by private airlines and Air India operating between Leh, Jammu and Delhi have become unaffordable for local passengers, who are facing great difficulties struggling to return home. Hill Council would designate an official team to be stationed at Chandigarh for operational dealings with the stranded passengers in case of alternative defense air service for them, and this would be taken up with the State Government also.
Spalbar also asked Lt. Gen. Rakesh Sharma to adjust these stranded passengers in Army’s regular flight. In addition, he also sought Army’s help, in every possible way, under their Sadbhavna campaign during the forthcoming Kalachakra ceremony in Leh.
He also wished that the special Defense air service for local civilians be continued during Kalachakra also. Transportation facility for BPL card holders from remote parts of Ladakh during Kalachakra was also raised by Spalbar to which the Army Commander readily agreed while giving assurances with regard to other demands.
