Chairman, Dy Chairman Legislative Council, Minister, officers call on Governor

JAMMU, Apr 21: Haji Anayat Ali, Chairman and Jahangir Hussain Mir, Deputy Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council, called on N.N. Vohra, Governor, here at the Raj Bhavan today.
On their first meeting with the Governor after assuming office, the Chairman and Deputy Chairman briefed the Governor about the major issues which had come up in the just concluded session of the Legislative Council and about the to-date status of the new Legislative Complex which is coming up at Jammu.
The Governor stressed the high importance of the effective functioning of the Legislature, observing that this is the constitutional modality for ensuring that the executive remains fully accountable for its functioning.
The Governor suggested to Haji Anayat Ali and Jahangir Hussain Mir to enlarge the vision about their role and also visit the Parliament and meet its constitutional office bearers.
Abdul Ghani Kohli, Minister of State for Transport (Independent Charge) and MoS Rural Development and Horticulture also called on Governor.
The Governor urged Mr. Kohli to take sustained personal interest in implementing all required steps for reducing the incidence of recurring road accidents which lead to hundreds being killed and thousands being injured every year.
Mr. Kohli briefed the Governor about the various steps taken by the Transport Department in this regard and the initiatives being taken to deal with prolonged delays caused by traffic hold ups in the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar.
Mr. Kohli also briefed the Governor about the progress of implementation of various Centrally Sponsored Schemes in the Department of Rural Development and Department of Horticulture.
Danesh Rana, Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone also called on Mr. Vohra who discussed issues pertaining to internal security management in the Jammu region and the need for effective steps being taken to ensure against recurring infiltration across the IB and terrorist attacks in the Jammu region.
Mr. Rana briefed the Governor about the steps being taken in this regard and about the overall security situation in the Jammu region.
Mr. Rohit Kansal, Commissioner Secretary, Public Works Department (Roads and Buildings) and Floriculture Department who also called on Governor apprised the latter about the various roads and buildings projects presently under implementation by the department and the steps being taken to enhance maintenance standards.
The Governor stressed the importance of ensuring the effective maintenance of major roads and highways in the State, particularly those which have recently been transferred by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to the State Public Works Department.
