KATRA, July 10: Prof Kamta Prasad, Chairman, Institute of Resource Management & Economic Development and former president of Indian Economic Association, delivered an expert lecture on “Environment Impact Assessment in India” at SMVDU, here today.
Prof Prasad, who has been a Professor of Economics at Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi and IIT Kanpur, is an authority on this subject. He highlighted the importance of Article 21of the Constitution relating to Fundamental Right to life and the conflict between development projects and environment as well as the need to strike a balance between the two.
He also emphasized the need to find out mitigation measures to offset and neutralize adverse effects of development projects on the environment. He also gave the chronological sequence of development since 1974 when environmental clearance for mega projects was made mandatory in India. He also highlighted the importance of the detail checklists for 26 sectors as the guideline for environmental impact assessment. “Study of such topics is very important for all Engineering and Management graduates,” he said and appreciated the efforts of the University in terms of promoting such education under the leadership of Prof Sudhir K Jain, Vice Chancellor.
