JAMMU, July 15: Gabbion check dam constructed at Panchayat Jaswan Block Marh has proved as a boon to the farmers.
During the Panchayat meetings, the Panchayat Jaswan had raised the urgent need for the construction of check dam over perennial Nullah “Burj Khul”. On the site the residual structure of I&FC Department was taken over by the Rural Development Department, Jammu.  I&FC Department used to seasonally do some residual work which used to get washed away in every rainy season.
Keeping in view the need of the area and the requirement of the site, ACD  Jammu K.K.Sidha, BDO Waseem Raja Khan and members of Panchayat Jaswan & REW of  Jammu after site inspection and threadbare discussions arrived at the idea of constructing Gabion structure as per approved NREGA guidelines.
The structure constructed is strong and can withstand vagaries of Monsoon. With the construction of check dam the farmers of Burj, Simbli, Jaswan, Makyal and Hirachak villages have timely transplanted paddy in more than 5000 Kanals of land for which, otherwise they were dependent on the Monsoons and irrigation tubewells.
Moreover, around 10 farmers have disconnected the electric connections of their tube wells which they had installed for irrigating their lands. With assured irrigation, check dam has proved to be a very productive asset. This has also fulfilled the very essence of NREGA wherein it is emphasized to create viable and productive assets.
It is pertinent to mention here that Jammu District & ACD Jammu K.K Sidha have been awarded National Award for Effective Implementation of MGNREGA in the district. Sarpanch Jaswan, Narinder Singh on behalf of the Panchayat and farmers in particular has appreciated the innovation of the Rural Development Department which has ushered an era of green revolution in the area.
