Chess Emerged as the Best Game for Kids During COVID-19. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the world witnessed a seismic shift in various aspects of daily life, and the lives of children were no exception. With schools closing their doors and outdoor activities restricted, parents faced the daunting challenge of keeping their kids entertained and engaged indoors. Surprisingly, one ancient game emerged as the undisputed champion during these trying times – Chess.
As virtual learning became the norm, concerns about excessive screen time and its impact on children’s development rose. Chess came to the rescue as an intellectually stimulating alternative to passive screen activities. The game’s complex strategies and critical thinking requirements provided kids with a challenging and rewarding mental exercise without needing a device.The virtual nature of chess opened doors to global connections. Kids had the opportunity to play with peers from different countries, exposing them to diverse cultures and perspectives. Such interactions broadened their horizons and fostered a sense of global awareness.
As I delved into the role of an educator, I quickly realized that I was not just teaching chess; I was nurturing young minds, encouraging critical thinking, and fostering a passion for lifelong learning.When I continuously embarked on this path, I saw it merely as a means to share my love for chess with others. Little did I know that this decision would go beyond imparting knowledge of the game’s strategies and tactics.
“One of the most gratifying moments in my career as a chess educator was witnessing my students holding trophies and excelling in various chess tournaments. Nothing could compare to the sense of pride and accomplishment I felt when I saw my young kids demonstrate their mastery of the game, employing strategies and tactics we had worked on together to outmanoeuvre their opponents. Watching them compete with such intensity and focus was a joy to behold. These moments served as powerful reminders of the impact that dedicated instruction and mentorship can have on young people’s lives.
