JAMMU, Aug 9: Acting on the complaints of the consumers regarding non issuance of bills, charging of exorbitant rates and non adherence to the marking of mandatory declarations on the pre packed commodities, the Department of Legal Metrology conducted thorough inspections in Gandhi Nagar area.
A total of 17 traders dealing with selling of toys, health care products, sports items and other goods were checked and five cases were registered under various provisions of law enforced for the purpose.
According to complaint of consumer namely Deepak from Shastri Nagar, he went to M/s Prakash Chander and Sons for purchase of toys for his child and was sold a Chinese game for Rs 750 with out marked price on the same.
The consumer insisted for the bill but was flatly refused by the trader with the remarks, “we don’t give bills for the Chinese toys as they are purchased on the dummy bills”. On further insisting by the consumer for the bill, the trader refused to even sell the game and resultantly the consumer filed the complaint under the Consumer Protection Act for redressal of his grievance.
According to Manoj Prabhakar, Deputy Controller Consumer Protection, Inspector Legal Metrology Mohisin Kateeb acted as a dummy consumer and went for the purchase of the commodity from the shop and found the complaint as genuine. He seized the Chinese items which were not declaring the mandatory declarations like MRP, name of the importer etc and case was registered against the defaulter with the notice to produce bills.
According to other complaints relating to selling of proteins and other energy drinks used in the gym at the exorbitant rates, the team also booked M/s Health for You & Kumar and Kumar Sports at Gandhi Nagar under the relevant provisions of law for selling sports items at the higher rates. The seized items were not marked with MRP as such being sold by the traders at their will & whim.
Two other traders were also booked by the Inspector for violation of PCR. The department has warned the traders to desist from the unethical practices of cheating hapless consumers.
