Srinagar Aug 25: The members of All J&K Chowkidar Association today demanded to be included in the Minimum Wages Act Eategory and urged the administration to take note of their issues which have remained unaddressed for several years.
Scores of Chowkidars from different parts of Kashmir appeared at Partap Park, Press Enclave where they were seen raising slogans and holding placards in favour of their demands. They said that their wages are Rs 50 per day and that the same has never witnessed any hike.
“Our honorarium is less and it has remained the same for the last several years, despite bringing the matter to the notice of the concerned authorities from time to time. We have been reaching out to the Divisional commissioner, Kashmir, Revenue Department including other officials, but our issue concerning the increase in the wages has remained unresolved,” said Sheikh Bashir Ahmad, president of the Association.
He said that the Government has recently formed a committee to fix the wages of the workers under the Minimum Wages Act and that they (Chowkidars) should also be included in the fixing of the wages as per the Act.
“We should also be included and our wages should be fixed as per the law because we have been running from pillar to post for the last several years for the resolution of our matter, but nothing has been done,” the President said.
He said that if their wages are increased, they are not included in fixing the wages under the Act in the committee which has been constituted.
He has threatened to stop the work which they are doing in their concerned areas if their demands are not met.
