JAMMU, Dec 31: BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh has criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for travelling abroad during the National mourning for former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.
Chugh called Gandhi’s decision to celebrate the New Year overseas insensitive and reflective of Congress’s lack of respect for its senior leaders.
Chugh alleged that the Congress party has a history of disrespecting its senior leaders.
He accused Rahul Gandhi of continuing this trend by showing disregard for Dr Singh, adding that Congress’s focus remains limited to the Nehru-Gandhi family.
He stated, “Congress repeatedly undermined Dr Manmohan Singh during his tenure as Prime Minister. Sonia Gandhi functioned as the ‘super PM,’ sidelining Dr Singh’s experience and authority. Rahul Gandhi disrespected him further by publicly tearing an ordinance approved by Dr Singh’s cabinet, demeaning both the Prime Minister and the institution itself.”
Chugh highlighted Congress’s alleged neglect of leaders like Nehru, Ambedkar, Sardar Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and PV Narasimha Rao.
He contrasted this with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s establishment of a Prime Ministers’ Museum to honor all former PMs.
Chugh also accused Congress leaders of politicizing Dr Singh’s demise while ignoring his legacy.
He said the Modi-led Cabinet had already decided to build a memorial in Dr Singh’s honour, demonstrating true respect.
Chugh questioned Rahul Gandhi’s priorities, asking, “Is it the ideal of the Gandhi family that when the entire nation is mourning, a leader holding a significant position like Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha chooses to holiday abroad?
